Gun Hunting Games

Gun Hunting Games

When I think back to when I first saw gun hunting games, the original Nintendo Duck Hunter comes into my mind.  That was the first gun hunting game for home use.  Not that long after Operation Wolf, an arcade game,  came into the arena.  I’m not ashamed to admit that I spent a quarter or two in that one. ;)

Nowadays, gun hunting games have come full circle.  More and more game systems are adding gun attachments for various games.  While the styles of guns have changed, the accuracy had a long time before it caught up with the latest technology.  We’re getting closer than ever to pinpoint accuracy.  And I’m curious to see what the industry will come up with next.  Since the age of Doom and other games, the consumer is driving more realism – it will come soon.

Atari Fishing Games?

March 20, 2008 – 1:19 pm

I’m having a problem finding information on Atari Fishing Games – does one exist?  I’ve searched the common Atari databases but didn’t see one.  But I know there was a ton of underground games made for the Atari.  If anyone knows of an Atari Fishing Game, please let me know!

Goose Hunting Games

March 11, 2008 – 9:35 pm

I am a goose hunter, and I have to say I haven’t seen anything remotely close to a semi-good goose hunting game to play. There’s maybe a “honk” button (clicking on the goose call), and there doesn’t seem to be much skill at all (if the AI has any skill built into it other than honking or not).

I think the industry needs to consult with a true goose hunter before thinking about building their next game. They do the same for every sports game, skateboarding, and on and on…why not with goose hunting? Or any hunting or fishing game for that matter, the industry needs to approach their development from a different angle. That’s my 2 cents.

Reviews on Wii Fishing Games

March 5, 2008 – 10:15 am

Currently, there isn’t a large amount of options for hunting and fishing games for the Wii. Hopefully that will change soon.

However, I have play Sega Bass Fishing for the Nintendo Wii. If I’m going to offer reviews on Wii fishing games, this will be my first.

This bass fishing game parallels a long line of bass fishing games from previous gaming systems. The graphics have gotten better, there is a larger map, and it also offers more gaming options; but the drawback is the actual Wii style itself. After playing this game for a couple hours, you can get a sore wrist in a hurry. Now throwing thousands of casts is nothing new to me, from bass fishing to musky fishing, but it’s just not the same as the Wii console.

I was actually given this game from a buddy as in his words, “I got sick of it”. I probably played 3-4 sessions and on the last session is when I got a sore wrist. Makes you wonder if the Wii will someday be responsible for some cases of carpel tunnel syndrome, but that remains to be seen. To the games credit, it is fun and enjoyable. And by using the Wii console, it offers more realistic action to casting than just pressing a button in previous systems. So with that being said I will give this game a 6.5 out of 10.

Hunting Games Too Play

Fishing Game for Kids

February 25, 2008 – 9:13 pm

I stumbled across this game the other day and thought it was worth sharing. I have a youngster and although he’s not quite at the age to play the game, his obsession with electronics will lead him there eventually. There isn’t many learning games for kids that involve fishing, not with it being as PC the other day but oh well.

Fishing Game for Kids – It’s basically a spelling game for youngsters in a fishing environment.

Deer Hunting Games for the Nintendo Wii

February 4, 2008 – 10:02 pm

For a long time now, the press has been “surprised” that the primitive sport of deer hunting could possibly hit mainstream America with interest. An Article by MSNBC wrote about it just the other year when Deer Hunter Pro hit the arcades all across the U.S.  I’ve seen this game and many others like it in Sports Bars in many towns.

So is Nintendo ready to take on this interaction?  Will we see any deer hunting games for the Nintendo Wii?  Only time will tell, but given what I’ve seen it do thus far with various controllers, we’ve got a lot to look forward to.  One could only hope that Nintendo could hire Ted Nugent as a consultant, maybe a more interesting style instead of the Japanese take on deer hunting.

Super Nintendo – Super Black Bass Fishing Game

Super Black Bass Fishing for the Super Nintendo

When I think back to one of the early bass fishing games that I actually played for more than 10 minutes, I think of Super Black Bass Fishing.  This was for the Super Nintendo (has it been that long?).  So many of the bass fishing games that have been created since are somewhat of a blueprint of that game.

I will admit, it’s been awhile since I played this game.  My Super Nintendo disappeared through one of my moves years back, so at this moment in time we’re still separated.  I do hope to reunite someday though. ;-)

I think you could’ve done the whole game with simply a crankbait or by sinking a spinner bait to the desired depth.  If you jiggled and worked the bait enough, the fish would eventually take it every time.  Then of course that was up to you.  They really tried to get the user to master the pull/tension on the line compared to the size of the fish.  Since it was a game it was way over done.  In real life the fisherman would beef up the line and use power to get the fish in when fishing tournaments, but hey…who said Hollywood or the game world was real life.

There was a lot of lakes to fish and areas to cover.  I do recall myself playing into the late hours on this one.  Just another one of those games that consumed part of my childhood.  Since I like the old school, I’m going to give this one an 8.5 out of 10.  Part of me wants to give it a 9 but the game will be too dated for some to enjoy.

Online Turkey Hunting Game by ESPN

January 14, 2008 – 4:53 pm

One of the turkey game to play online was over at ESPN. For a free turkey hunting game, it’s not a huge step away from what’s available for your PC. It does give you some customization so it’s not just a carnival shoot. You can choose the season which makes a difference in how you hunt in real life. You can also choose between various camo patterns. It’s a pretty light download and is easily removed. It’s worth checking out, but you will probably end up shopping for a turkey hunting game for a PC.

Turkey hunting season is fast approaching…

Ultimate Duck Hunting – Nintendo Wii

January 4, 2008 – 3:11 pm

When I was a kid, I can clearly remember when my best friend across the street got one of the first Nintendo’s on the block. He got it for his birthday, and it was the first time I had seen it. I can even remember the robot that came with it (many can’t since it disappeared over time since it was useless). But I also remember playing Duck Hunt for the Original Nintendo. From the start you just had to question it’s accuracy. Remember pointing the opposite direction and a duck would fall??? Either it was a perfect bounce off the wall (which isn’t possible by the way) or the game lacked realism….fast forward about 20 years to the Nintendo Wii of today.

Ultimate Duck Hunting for the Nintendo Wii is out. And right away I can’t help but notice how similar it is to the original. I am a duck hunter myself, so I was expecting something a little more real as only the Wii has brought out in gaming today. Needless to say at first watch I was disappointed. But Ultimate Duck Hunting is still what it is, a carnival shoot. The accuracy these days is very close so the chance for a competitive nature is still there. I’m sure the animal rights groups hate the game…so for that reason I will say I give it a thumbs up! (hard to agree on anything with the other extreme)

If I had a 1 out of 10 rating, I would give the Nintendo Wii Ultimate Duck Hunting a 7 out of 10 (giving a bit extra since I support waterfowling).  You can play Ultimate Duck Hunting as long as you have what is compatible with the Nintendo Wii.  And if you search hard enough, you’ll see the free duck hunting game version out there on the web.
